Having watched the Bracknell Bees secure the EPL Cup, and driven my way safely out of Slough (no cars on stilts for me!), I managed to catch the Inside Sport special into the Bejing Olympics that will be happening later this year.
I’m not a great fan of the programme, I feel it doesn’t go into depth on many topics, and it has Gabby Yorath presenting it, whos claim to fame is that her dad managed Wales some time ago.
But they raised an interesting point regarding Drugs and testing for the Olympics especially in the case of Human Growth Hormone, or HGH, as it is more commonly known as.
Drugs have unfortunately littered the Olympics recently, Dwain Chambers, Marion Jones, the Greek pair, the BALCO scandal, but there is a new menace rather than steroids on the approach.
The HGH test being used on olympics athletes can only pick up a trace of HGH if it has been used in the last 24 hours, giving athletes a very easy loophole.
The suprising thing about the programme was that there was no link to the scandal’s currently attacking Baseball, and the use of HGH.
Played out before Congress, the hearing into Roger Clemens alleged use of HGH, open up a world of troubles and dangers. It showed a man who should be considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time, as a cheat and a fraud.
It also showed the man who had supplied him with HGH as what he truely is, a low-life, drug dealer. The FACT that he was previously a New York City Cop, only adds to the intrigue of this story.
The sad fact is that the great game of Baseball has been dragged through the mire. First the Barry Bonds Scandal, then the Mitchell Report, and now Roger Clemens. Baseball will take a long time to repair from this.
The sadder fact is that people will always use needles to win, and until there comes a time that drug testing are superior, we should all have to put an asterik next to everybody’s career.
