Creating fury out of nothing. The sports writers should really be worrying about the anniversary of the Munich Disaster, or the incredible inability of Reading to actually win in the Premier League ever again. Instead, they are all going loop-the-loop over the Premier League’s possible plan to expand into Europe and beyond.
As expected, its being met with a variety of reponse from those in the media. Steven Howard of The Sun, today wrote about the distrust that owners and managers should have of Richard Scudamore, the Chairman of the Premier League. A man who was only interested in lining his and the owners profits, rather than developing for the best of the English game. Sounds pretty familiar to me.
This season, three of the major four British sports went overseas, bringing their game with them. The NBA brought a pre-season exhibition game to the O2, The NHL brought their champions over to start the regular season off with ‘The London Premiere’, two games over a weekend at the sold-out O2, and then the showpiece of the lot, the NFL playing out of Wembley Stadium, with a game including the eventual Super Bowl champions. All these events have been hailed a success, so much so, that the NFL are returning to Wembley, and the NHL will tour Prague and Stockholm next year, with the NBA and MLB yet to announce any plans as of yet.
When these events were first announced, each of the comissoners were met with shouts of anger. Players unions refused to play, fans were worried that they would be losing out on games, the media were distressed that THEIR sports were being taken abroad, but by the end of it all, it was a undeniable success for all. (Well, except my Ducks team who seem to have struggled with lag when they got back…but hey ho, least I got to see them play…and win).
All the crowing by our media is once again shameful. Whinge and whine, they should be delighted that they have such an engine of news within their own countries. And who cares about it to be honest? Its only one game per team. I can just see all the kids in Sydney clambouring for tickets to Reading v Bolton, at least it will sell-out in that country, rather than be played in front of empty stadiums here. And who knows, it might just mean that more people become involved in our sport, rather than play cricket. We might have a chance to regain those ‘Ashes’ if that happens!
